2010 Michael Brocki

Michael Brocki joined the Smith Point Lifeguards in the summer of 2002 and, from the beginning, it was evident that Michael had the skills and Ocean moxi to be an outstanding Smith Point Lifeguard. A couple of months before joining SPORT, Brocki won a State Championship in 200 freestyle! With great success in the pool, Brocki was drawn to the competition team, where he helped to contribute winning six USLA National Lifeguard Championships!

Currently, Michael is a middle school teacher at West Hampton School District, and coaches a local USS Swim Team, Islanders Aquatics. During the summer, he continues to protect the Long Island shore.

Due to his strong personality, positive manner, and powerful work ethic, Michael
Brocki has been named Suffolk County Lifeguard of the Year for 2012.

Smith Point Rookie of the Year – Matt Pluhowski and Steven Galvao

Matt Pluhowski lives in Patchogue and currently attends St. Anthony’s High School. He is a pole volter that can clear a height of 12 feet on his cross-country team. After high school, Pluhowski is planning to enter Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy.

Matt joined our Smith Point Lifeguards in June of 2010 and it was quickly evident that he loves to protect and serve the Suffolk County Public. He is sharp, quick off the tower and has great water safety skills. Because of his good nature and work ethic, Matt Pluhowski has been selected as the Rookie of the Year for Smith Point Lifeguards.

Steven Galvao graduated from Selden High School in June of 2009. He currently lives in Selden and plans to attend Suffolk County Community College in the fall. Throughout his High School career, Steven has been competing on the cross country and swimming teams.

Steven takes his love of running and swimming to complete in triathlons during the summer. In the future, he would like to pursue a spot on a Pararescue team, part of the United States Air Force, and eventually become a high school biology teacher.

Congratulations Steven on being named the 2010 Rookie of the Year.
