A heat dome is headed for L.I. this week

A dangerous heat dome is expected to bring several days of extreme heat and humidity to Long Island. A heat dome happens when a strong area of high pressure traps hot air close to the ground, causing temperatures to climb well into the 90s. With the humidity, it may feel like it is over 100 degrees.

These conditions can be dangerous, especially for young children, older adults, and people who work or exercise outdoors. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can happen quickly if proper precautions are not taken.

Stay safe by drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored clothing, taking breaks in air-conditioned buildings, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Check on family members, neighbors, and friends who may need extra help during this dangerous stretch of summer weather.
