A meteor creates sonic boom …
Did you hear that a meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts on May 30, creating a loud boom that was heard across parts of the region? NASA said the explosion released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT. It was reported that the sound traveled as far as Long Island, NY.
The meteor reportedly broke apart about 40 miles above northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire before falling into Cape Cod Bay. While most meteors burn up harmlessly in Earth’s atmosphere, larger ones can create spectacular fireballs and powerful shock waves like this one. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
