Rip Current warning for the Suffolk County Beaches
A rip current warning is in effect for Long Island beaches due to the impacts of Hurricane Ernesto. The category 2 hurricane, currently churning in the Atlantic, is generating strong swells that are expected to produce hazardous surf conditions along the coastline.
Rip currents are fast-moving channels of water that flow away from the shore and can easily pull swimmers out to deeper waters, making them extremely dangerous. Even the most experienced swimmers can find themselves in trouble if caught in one.
The combination of high surf and rip currents poses a significant threat, especially to those unfamiliar with ocean swimming. The National Weather Service advises anyone visiting the beach to heed posted warnings and stay within designated swimming areas where lifeguards are on duty. It’s also recommended to avoid swimming alone and to remain onshore if conditions appear rough. The rip current risk will remain high until the storm passes and ocean conditions stabilize, so it’s crucial to stay informed and exercise caution.
And remember to always swim near a lifeguard.
