Smith Point edges out East Hampton to win 2018 Long Island Lifeguard Championship

On Monday, July 30th, lifeguards from across Long Island came together for a day of intense competition to see who is the best on the Island. Many times the competition resembles the USLA National Lifeguard Championships, as year after year, the same individuals wind up competing for the same title at the national level.

The annual Joseph W. Dooley Long Island Lifeguard Championship is comprised of eight events. This year, Smith Point hosted seven teams: East Hampton Town, Jones Beach, Long Beach, Smith Point, Westhampton, Town of Islip and Town of Hempstead. Each team is made up of twelve competitors.  All eight events are exciting to watch, local favorite is always landline (standard Smith Point rescue) and beach flags.

Jones Beach Lifeguards came out of the gate super fast, earning points in the distance swim and fast runs in the 2K beach run, and taking first in two events back to back.

Then here comes East Hampton …

Eric Bramoff’s double yoke performance was nothing short of great. His team hooked up 3rd, but Eric pulled his team in first. In Bramoff’s words:”I was listening to Smith Point guys coaching their team, when they said landline-it, I did. When they screamed to yoke it, I yoked it.” It was really exciting to watch. Additionally, East Hampton took first in the Rescue Board Relay… but that is not all. John Ryan Jr.’s team took two additional first place finishes in 4 x 100 run relay and run-swim-run. East Hampton came out to play on Monday!

Smith Point stayed in it throughout the tournament taking crucial but close second and third place finishes. Winning the landline and beach flags, however, solidified the close win for Smith Point Lifeguards! Super fast Lifeguards Friedman, Appel and Captain Triani didn’t disappoint! The last event, beach flags, of the day helped pushed Smith Point to the top!

Apart from that, Smith Point, East Hampton, Jones Beach and Long Beach lifeguards who competed at L. I. Championship will be preparating for Nationals, set to be hosted August 7 through 11 at Virginia Beach.

As always a special ‘thank you’ goes out to all other Lifeguards from our Long Island beaches and across South Shore and beyond that stayed back and watched over our public! Their commitment to excellence is greatly appreciated!
