Boat capsized while fishing the Moriches Inlet – Cupsogue Beach

By Paul Peluso
About 9:45 this morning a boat with one occupant capsized while fishing just outside of Moriches Inlet. According to witnesses, the 20? center console was fishing close to shore and took a wave over stern. The fisherman tried to bilge the water out but it either didn’t work or couldn’t handle the volume of water and another wave capsized the boat moments later.
The fisherman swam to shore on the west side of the inlet and called the Coast Guard.

The boat then floated around the west jetty and drifted through the inlet and ended up in shallow water near the island on the back side of the inlet.

No one was hurt and I didn’t see any fuel in the water, sorry I wasn’t able to get any names or other information. Please be careful fishing around Moriches Inlet, even in relatively calm conditions things can change in a hurry!
