New Smith Point Bridge Will Bring Safer, Stronger Connection to the Park
Suffolk County is replacing the aging Smith Point Bridge with a new, state-of-the-art bridge that will be built just west of the existing structure. The new bridge will carry William Floyd Parkway (CR 46) over Narrow Bay and into Smith Point County Park, creating a safer, stronger, and more reliable connection for the community.
The current bridge was built in 1959 and has served Suffolk County for more than 60 years.
The new bridge will be 1,812 feet long and designed to last approximately 75 years. It will feature 11 spans, each about 165 feet long, supported by prestressed concrete beams and post-tensioned concrete piers.
The bridge will also provide 55.6 feet of vertical clearance and 100 feet of horizontal clearance for boats and other marine traffic. It will include an ADA-accessible pedestrian and bicycle path, along with improved road alignments on both sides of the bridge to help traffic move more efficiently.
