New year. New gym membership… Skin infection?
Many people are familiar with the health benefits of exercise, but fewer realize the risk of skin infections in damp, warm environments like sweaty studios, unclean gym equipment, and communal showers. Conditions such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, plantar warts, and impetigo are common but preventable. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests these precautions:
- Wear moisture-wicking clothing to help keep your skin dry.
- Avoid going barefoot, especially in humid areas like locker rooms and pools.
- Clean equipment and surfaces before and after use, including machines, weights, and mats.
- Wash your hands regularly to reduce germ exposure.
- Shower after workouts and change into clean, dry clothing.
If you suspect a gym-related skin infection, consult a dermatology provider for an evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
Good luck and train hard!
