THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SMITH POINT BRIDGE OVER NARROW BAY

Proposed Bridge Rendering, view southwest

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) is undertaking a project to replace the existing Smith Point
Bridge over Narrow Bay carrying the William Floyd Parkway (C.R. 46), in the Town of Brookhaven. This project is a
being funded in part with money from the Federal Highway Administration. Since the public information meeting held
in June 2016, some elements of the project have changed. This is because the design has been advanced, and also
reflects public feedback received. The purpose of this Public Information Meeting is to keep the public informed of the
project’s status, and the proposed design changes. The project includes the following elements:

  • Replacement of the existing Smith Point Bridge, with a new replacement bridge built on an alignment slightly to
the west (approximately 150 feet) of the existing bridge.
  • Inclusion of a protected shared use path to accommodate pedestrians & cyclists on the bridge. (NEWELEMENT)
  • Inclusion of a fishing pier below the northern portion of the new bridge. (NEWELEMENT)
  • Provides continuous vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle access across Narrow Bay during construction.
  • Removal of the existing bridge after completion of the new bridge.
  • Parkland and wetland restoration associated with old bridge removal and new bridge construction.
