Sayville native Jack Coan will be the Wisconsin Badgers starting quarterback this season.
The junior, who was listed in the depth chart as the team’s top quarterback, beat out two other players.
The team will begin their season Friday against the South Florida Bulls.
Following injuries to two other quarterbacks last year, Coan led the Badgers to a 35-3 victory against Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. He completed 6-of-11 passes for 73 yards, while throwing and running in a touchdown.
Because Coan had to fill in for the Badgers in the bowl game, he lost his redshirt, which will result in one less year of eligibility.
In high school, Coan set Long Island records, passing for 9,787 yards and throwing 128 touchdowns. He also rushed for 2,551 yards and scored 33 touchdowns on the ground. He was named the top quarterback in Suffolk County three times.
