2019 Junior Lifeguards Week #2

Week #2

Introduction: Heat Wave

(10:05-10:10 AM) Mini Heat Wave Precaution Lecture

How do you stay safe in a heat wave? Stay hydrated with plenty of water, ideally every 15 minutes — even if you’re not thirsty. Don’t drink sugary drinks, or other caffeinated beverages, as they will only make dehydration worse. Stay under the shade. Use sunscreen and wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and a hat made of breathable material. Keep an eye on your kids, elderly, neighbors, friends, family and pets.

10:10-10:35 AM (Capt. Triani, LG. N. Pikulik and LG. J. Horan) Backboard safety. Junior Lifeguards will be familiar with the process of pulling a person out of the water in the safe manner, immobilizing them, protecting the neck and walking out of a potentially hazardous situation.

10:35-10:50 AM (LG Penteck, LG. Levisauskas, LG. Muscarella) CPR; Adult, Child and Infant. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. The Smith Point Junior Lifeguard program’s goal is to educate our Suffolk County Patrons and youth about ocean safety. Through ocean training, interaction and exploration, the Smith Point Junior Lifeguards gain: development of confidence, mental and physical fitness and respect for one another and the coastal environment.

We have one more Saturday to go. (7/27/19) the training is going to start at 10:05 AM and conclude at 11:05 AM. The sessions are free.
Parents should arrive at 9:45 AM and fill out a waiver. Without a waiver, your child cannot participate in the S.P.J.L.P. (You just need to sign one waiver per child per season.)

We are looking to compete at Junior Lifeguard East Hampton Tournament on August 3rd (Saturday) and August 4th (Sunday). There is no fee for this tournament, if interested please reach out to Capt. Borkowski for more details. Flyer with more details is forthcoming soon.
