Flight 800
Today marked the 19th anniversary of the TWA Flight 800 crash. TheĀ ceremony was held in the evening for family and friends of the victims at the memorial at Smith Point.
The Paris-bound TWA Flight 800 had just taken off from Kennedy Airport when it exploded at 8:31 p.m. July 16, 1996 and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean south of Moriches Inlet, killing 230 people. In the hours, days and months afterward friends and families of the victims were drawn to the shores of Smith Point County Park in Mastic.
The names of the 230 passengers and crew that perished were read and family members read poems in remembrance of their loved ones.
