Heat Wave … be smart, safe and cautious!

The Suffolk County Parks’ beaches are here for everyone to enjoy and we hope that your activities can be guided by common sense. Below you will find some safety tips and laws that can help make a visit to Suffolk County Parks more pleasurable and safe for everyone.

Heat Safety Tips

*Limit exercise or strenuous physical activity once temperature reaches 90* F

*Wear loose-fitting clothing

*Drink plenty of water, and don’t wait until you are thirsty to take a drink. If exercising heavily in hot weather, aim for two to four glasses of water – or 16 to 32 ounces – every hour

*Stay away from liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine or lots of sugar

*If working, or playing in the hot summer sun, take a break in a shady area to cool down

*Wear sunscreen. It’s harder for the body to keep sunburned skin cool

*Wear a hat to keep the sun off the face and head

*Know the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as heat strokeheat exhaustion and heat cramps.
