OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury men’s and women’s swim team competed in the 2012 Skyline Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, New York. The men’s squad finished with 69 points and claimed second place for the second consecutive year led by Bryan Woodhead, who earned Old Westbury’s second consecutive Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year honors. Panther women captured fifth place, and were paced by Lydia Coleman, who earned a pair of All-Skyline Second-Team laurels.
Bryan Woodhead took home first place in the 50 freestyle with a finish time of 21.28, shattering former Panther Yury Zimarev’s conference record of 21.70 that was set in 2007. Woodhead also captured the top spot in the 100 freestyle (47.62) and 100 backstroke (53.87) events. Ricky Damiano won the 200 IM race after touching the wall first in 2:19.34. Old Westbury’s 200 medley relay squad of Bryan Woodhead, Stephen Paul, Ricky Damiano and Cameron Russo team up to finish second in 1:44.11. Cameron Russo added a pair of third place finishes, clocking times of 51.13 and 57.88 in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly events, respectively. Ricky Damiano also took home third place honors, with a time of 5:44.32 in the 500 freestyle. Carl Nowicki, Stephen Paul, Kareem Bryan and Cameron Russo got together to place third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:40.29. Ricky Daminao added a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.30 while Stephen Paul (4th, 200 breaststroke, 2:37.54); 5th 100 breaststroke, 1:08.01), Kareem Bryan(5th, 100 butterfly, 1:04.21) and Thomas Mauro (6th, 200 backstroke, 2:27.51) also earned points by placing in the championships. In total, the men’s squad registered All-Skyline Conference First-Team in the 50 freestyle (Bryan Woodhead), 100 freestyle (Bryan Woodhead), 100 backstroke (Bryan Woodhead), 200 IM (Ricky Damiano) while taking All-Skyline Conference Second-Team honors in the 200 medley relay (Bryan Woodhead, Stephen Paul, Ricky Damiano, Cameron Russo). Old Westbury recorded season-best times in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay events.
