Blizzard hits Smith Point
A strong winter storm is hitting Long Island and could bring up to 24 inches of snow. The National Weather Service said snow was falling very fast—about 3 inches per hour—early in the morning. By 5 a.m., almost 15 inches had already fallen, and heavy snow was still coming down.
Strong winds are blowing up to 50 miles per hour, making the storm worse. A coastal flood warning is in place for parts of Suffolk and Nassau counties. Weather experts say the storm is at its strongest right now, with heavy snow and powerful winds across the area.
People should expect “whiteout” conditions, where it is very hard to see because of blowing snow. In Suffolk County, there is a state of emergency. Only essential workers and snowplow drivers are allowed on the roads until 9 a.m. Buses stopped running Sunday (2/22/26) afternoon and will start again Tuesday morning, according to County Executive Ed Romaine.
In Nassau County, a travel ban is also in place until 9 a.m. Monday, announced by County Executive Bruce Blakeman. New York City also has a travel ban until noon Monday.
According to Newsday, at approximately 4 AM, 2/23/26 Long Island already had over 12 inches of snow on the ground.
