Smith Point Bridge Update

Suffolk County officials announced a new three-ton weight limit for trucks on the Smith Point Bridge in Shirley after a routine NYSDOT inspection found structural deterioration. The restriction takes effect immediately and will remain while a deeper analysis is conducted and options to safely increase the load rating are reviewed. The county is already planning a long-term replacement, with construction on a new bridge underway since last year and completion expected in 2027.
