2025 Lifeguard of the Year – Ty Kolar

This summer, Ty was honored as the 2025 Suffolk County Lifeguard of the Year, a recognition that highlights both his dedication to public safety and his leadership within the Smith Point Ocean Rescue team. Among more than 100 ocean lifeguards, his commitment to excellence stood out.
Athletics have always shaped his journey. At Sayville High School, he earned All-County honors as a linebacker before playing four years of football at SUNY Cortland, where he started at safety and helped capture a National Championship. Along the way, Ty earned his degree in Physical Education. Today, he continues to inspire and coach the next generation as a varsity football coach at Sayville while beginning his student teaching at William Floyd and Bayport High Schools.
Now in his seventh season with Smith Point Ocean Rescue, he not only safeguards the public but also serves as a solid role model on the beach. Congratulation Ty!
Rookie of the Year – Donte Mathelier

Donte Mathelier on the Left
In just his first season at Smith Point, Donte Mathelier has already made a name for himself—earning the title of Rookie of the Year. From day one, Donte brought energy, determination, and a team-first attitude, quickly becoming a standout among his peers. He proudly represented Smith Point in two Long Island competitions, tackling events like the distance run (solid finish!), run-swim-run, and the 4×100 relay, where his hard work and athleticism shined through.
But Donte’s accomplishments extend far beyond the beach. A Longwood High School graduate, he is now pursuing his dream of becoming an orthodontist at Adelphi University. When he’s not studying, you’ll find him competing as part of Adelphi’s Division II swimming and diving team, balancing the demands of academics and athletics with impressive dedication.
What makes Donte truly stand out, however, is his outlook on life. He lives by the belief that “the energy you put out is the energy you get back,” and his positivity has had a ripple effect on everyone around him. Whether in the water, on the sand, or in the classroom, Donte exemplifies what it means to lead with heart, drive, and a smile. Congratulations Donte!

Still Water Rookie of the Year – Max Person

At Sayville High School, few students embody the balance of athletics, academics, and leadership quite like Max Person. A dedicated three-sport athlete, Max competes year-round in volleyball, basketball, and baseball, bringing the same determination and drive to each sport. His competitive spirit and commitment to teamwork have made him a standout both on the court and on the field.
Yet Max’s achievements go far beyond athletics. With a 104 GPA, he is an honor roll student who approaches his academics with the same intensity and discipline that he brings to competition. But what sets Max apart is his heart for service. As the president of Athletes Helping Others, Max leads a club dedicated to giving back to the community. Through this role, he has created opportunities for individuals with special needs to experience the joy of sports—moments that reflect his belief in the power of inclusion and teamwork.
When he’s not studying or training, Max finds adventure on the slopes, where snowboarding fuels his love for challenge and the outdoors. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the community, Max is a leader whose passion, perseverance, and positivity continue to inspire those around him.
With all of his athletic and academic accomplishments, it is no surprise that Max was voted in as a Meschutt Beach Rookie of the year. Congratulations Max!
