Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches reopen

After Hurricane Erin passed by, Smith Point and Cupsogue Beaches experienced a significant sand loss, leaving the shoreline uneven in places. Fortunately, lifeguards had prepared in advance, securing towers and rescue equipment before the storm tracked a few hundred miles east.
Once the skies cleared and the waves settled, the guards acted quickly—returning the towers and repositioning essential safety gear. It was a delayed opening. Beachgoers were eager to come back, lining the fences as lifeguards completed their setup. Many couldn’t wait to get in the water, excited to enjoy the weekend the right way: under the watchful eyes of lifeguards, back at their favorite spot.
And remember… always swim near a lifeguard.
