Are you ready for a hurricane?

FEMA’s Ready Campaign encourages Americans to prepare for emergencies by taking three key steps:
#1 Build an emergency supply kit
#2 Make a family emergency plan
#3 Stay informed about potential hazards and responses.
Further, FEMA recommends that families should keep basic supplies for several days, tailor kits to their specific needs (including pets), and maintain both a full home kit and smaller portable kits for work, vehicles, or other locations.
✅ Recommended Items for a Basic Emergency Supply Kit
- Water and non-perishable food for several days
- Extra cell phone battery or charger
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (with NOAA Weather Radio alerts) and extra batteries
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust mask, plastic sheeting, and duct tape (for shelter-in-place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for sanitation)
- Non-sparking wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Can opener (if kit contains canned food)
- Local maps
➕ Additional Items to Consider Adding
- Prescription medications and glasses
- Infant formula and diapers
- Pet food, water, and supplies for your pet
- Important family documents (insurance, ID, bank records) in a portable waterproof container
- Cash and change
- Emergency reference material (first aid book or Ready.gov info)
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person (add extra if in cold climate)
- Complete change of clothing (long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sturdy shoes; extras for cold climates)
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Feminine supplies, personal hygiene items, and hand sanitizer
- Mess kits, paper cups, plates, utensils, and paper towels
- Paper and pencil
- Books, games, puzzles, or other activities for children
It does seem like a lot of supplies and things to think about, however – it is always better to over-prepare and be ready.
