Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches are closed Wednesday (8/20/25) due to Hurricane Erin

Due to the high surf conditions at Smith Point and Cupsogue County Parks, both beaches are closed to swimming Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Please use caution if visiting the beaches and do not enter the water.

Additionally, A rip current warning is in effect for Long Island beaches as Hurricane Erin, a Category 4 storm in the Atlantic, sends powerful swells toward the coast. These waves are expected to create dangerous surf and strong rip currents.

Rip currents are narrow, fast-moving streams of water that pull away from shore, capable of sweeping swimmers into deeper waters. They pose a serious risk—even to strong and experienced swimmers.

The National Weather Service urges beachgoers to obey posted warnings, swim only in designated areas with lifeguards, and never swim alone. If conditions look rough, the safest choice is to stay on shore. The elevated risk will continue until the storm passes and seas calm.

And remember … Always swim near a lifeguard.
