July 25 – World Drowning Prevention Day

July 25 is World Drowning Prevention Day — a critical reminder that drowning is a global public health issue. According to the World Health Organization, more than 30 people lose their lives to drowning every hour, totaling an estimated 300,000 deaths each year. It remains one of the top ten causes of death among children and young people aged 1–24 in every region of the world.

Prevention starts with knowledge—and we urge everyone to follow these Top Ten Beach and Water Safety Tips whenever near water:

  1. Swim Near a Lifeguard
  2. Learn to Swim
  3. Understand Rip Current Safety
  4. Never Swim Alone
  5. Assign a Water Watcher
  6. Avoid Alcohol in and Around Water
  7. Enter Water Feet First
  8. Wear a Life Jacket
  9. Heed Warning Signs & Flags
  10. Stay Hydrated & Protect Yourself from the Sun
