Sunrise Highway Fire in Suffolk County

On March 8, 2025, strong winds caused several brush fires along Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County, Long Island. The fires spread quickly through areas like Center Moriches, East Moriches, Eastport, and Westhampton. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency as the flames threatened homes, businesses, and important buildings like a chemical factory and an Amazon warehouse. People near Gabreski Airport had to evacuate, and roads were shut down. Firefighters from over 40 departments worked hard to put out the flames, with help from the National Guard. By evening, most of the Westhampton fire was under control, but one firefighter was badly burned.
